How SJBE Maintains Publication Standards

SJBE evaluates manuscripts based on research quality, clarity of argument, methodology, evidence, statistical analysis where applicable, citations, and adherence to our publication standards. Acceptance is not guaranteed, and publication fees are only charged after a manuscript has been accepted.

Our Research Review Process

Every manuscript submitted to SJBE is evaluated before a publication decision is made. Our review process is designed to determine whether a paper is sufficiently developed, clearly presented, and appropriate for publication in a student-focused academic journal.

The review process generally considers the following areas.

1. Research Question

We first consider whether the paper has a clear and meaningful research question.

A strong research question should be specific enough to investigate and should provide a clear direction for the research. The paper should consistently address this question throughout its introduction, methodology, analysis, and conclusion.

2. Research Methodology

We evaluate whether the research methods are appropriate for the question being investigated.

Depending on the paper, this may include surveys, statistical analysis, economic or financial data, case studies, interviews, experiments, literature reviews, or analysis of publicly available datasets.

Authors should explain how their research was conducted and provide enough information for readers to understand how the results were obtained.

3. Evidence and Analysis

A research paper should do more than present information. Authors should analyze their evidence and explain what their findings mean.

For quantitative research, we may consider whether the statistical methods are appropriate and whether the results are interpreted correctly.

For qualitative research, we consider whether the evidence is analyzed systematically and whether the conclusions are supported by the research.

Authors should also avoid making claims that go beyond what their evidence can demonstrate.

4. Quality of the Argument

We evaluate whether the paper presents a logical and well-supported argument.

The introduction should establish the purpose of the research, the analysis should connect evidence to the research question, and the conclusion should follow logically from the findings.

We also consider whether important alternative explanations or limitations are appropriately addressed.

5. Sources and Citations

Research papers should use appropriate and credible sources.

Authors should clearly identify information, data, quotations, and ideas that come from other sources. Citations should be consistent with the journal's formatting requirements.

The number of citations required depends on the type of research. A paper should use enough evidence to support its important claims without relying on citations simply for the sake of increasing the number of references.

6. Organization and Presentation

A research paper should be organized in a way that allows readers to understand the research easily.

Depending on the paper, this may include sections such as:

Introduction
Literature Review
Methodology
Results
Discussion
Conclusion
References

Not every research project requires exactly the same structure. We evaluate the organization based on the type of research being presented.

What Happens After Submission?

After a manuscript is submitted, SJBE evaluates the paper against our publication requirements and research standards.

There are several possible outcomes.

Why did you request me to revise my paper?

We may ask an author to make specific changes before the paper can be published.

Revisions may involve improving the methodology, clarifying an argument, adding necessary evidence, correcting an interpretation of results, strengthening citations, or addressing limitations. We require each paper to be revised because we are a peer reviewed journal. If you submit your paper to a journal and they do not require you to change anything, you are not actually publishing in a journal that is actually peer reviewed.

A peer review is a critical evaluation process in which experts in the same field as the manuscript assess the quality, validity, and originality of a submitted paper before it is published in an academic journal. This process is essential because it ensures that the research meets the journal's standards and contributes meaningfully to the existing body of knowledge. When a journal claims to be peer-reviewed, it signifies a commitment to rigorous academic scrutiny, which typically involves requiring authors to revise their work based on feedback from reviewers. If a journal does not necessitate any changes to a submission, it may not be adhering to the true principles of peer review, potentially compromising the integrity and credibility of the published research.

Rejected

A manuscript may be rejected if it does not meet our publication standards or requires changes that cannot reasonably be addressed through revision. A main reason we often cite is also formatting related.

Submitting a paper to SJBE does not guarantee publication.

Publication Fees

SJBE allows students to submit their research for review without an initial submission fee.

For manuscripts that are accepted for publication, a publication fee applies. Authors are informed of the applicable fee after the publication decision rather than paying simply to have their manuscript reviewed.

The publication decision is based on the manuscript and its suitability for publication, not on an author's willingness to pay a publication fee.

What We Look for in High School Research

SJBE is specifically designed for high school researchers. We therefore recognize that student research may have a smaller scope than research produced by university researchers or professional academics.

We do not expect a high school paper to replicate the scale or resources of professional academic research.

Instead, we look for evidence that the student understands the research process and has developed a meaningful research question, used an appropriate methodology, analyzed evidence carefully, and reached conclusions that are supported by the research.

A paper does not need to be perfect to be considered for publication. However, it should demonstrate genuine research and meet the journal's fundamental standards for academic writing and analysis.

Research Integrity and Responsible Reporting

Authors are responsible for accurately presenting their research and properly acknowledging sources.

Research should not contain fabricated data, plagiarism, or intentionally misleading claims.

Authors should also distinguish between correlation and causation when interpreting quantitative results. A statistical relationship between two variables does not automatically demonstrate that one variable caused the other.

Similarly, conclusions should reflect the limitations of the research rather than making claims that extend beyond the available evidence.

Students and families should be able to evaluate a journal based on its actual policies and published research rather than relying solely on claims about prestige or selectivity.

Our Approach

SJBE's purpose is to provide a structured publication opportunity for high school students conducting original research.

We believe the most useful measure of a student research journal is not simply how professional its website looks or how many students submit papers. It is whether the journal clearly communicates its standards, evaluates research consistently, publishes identifiable research, and gives students a transparent understanding of the publication process.
