How Students Are Engaging in High School Research
We have observed that many students collaborate with research firms that connect high school students with PhD or master’s level students to assist them in research. Here are some of the most popular companies we’ve identified. Below, we will discuss some of these popular research companies and the publication components they have developed. We’ve found that the two most popular research companies are Polygence and Lumiere Education.
Polygence
Polygence is a platform designed to assist students in enhancing their college applications by pairing them with mentors for research projects. While most mentors are master’s level students, the platform offers a diverse range of mentors who specialize in various topics. If you’re interested in niche subjects such as gaming, art, or dance and prefer writing a paper over focusing on STEM, business, or economics, Polygence can likely connect you with a mentor who specializes in your area of interest.
Polygence Related Publishers
During publication, Polygence owns RARS, which is an SSRN-style, open-source publishing platform. These databases sometimes might be a great option to co-publish with peer-reviewed journals (if your journal allows it). They allow other students to reference your paper when they are writing theirs, increasing your ability for others to find your work.
Polygence also offers a peer-reviewed journal (Rising Scholars) that requires payment, but RARS is often considered a better alternative since it is free and has many more students publish their work there.
Lumiere Education
Lumiere Education partners the high school student with a PhD candidate or PhD with a mentor in their topic. Lumiere Education seems to be the biggest high school research company in the market currently.
Lumiere Related Publishers
Lumiere also owns OJSS (Oxford Journal of Student Scholarship). They are not affiliated with Oxford University in any way and publishing with OJSS will not increase your chances when applying to Oxford.
Research Quality Considerations
One observation we’ve made is that outcomes can vary. Similar to hiring a college counselor for assistance with college essays, some mentors will be more effective than others. Some might have better skills to advise you to write a highly quantitative paper with regressions while others might not have the skills and you’ll settle writing a literature review. As you read this article, you may have already embarked on your research journey and selected a research company to collaborate with. It’s crucial for high school students to select a mentor who can teach them quantitative skills and inspire them to exceed expectations, especially when it comes to business paper research. Be sure to interview a few of them before you choose one, if this is an option. While any student can write a literature review and repeat information, fewer students can produce a critical analysis on a specialized topic in business or economic theory.
Many students understand that they conduct research to publish it, but what if their approach is misguided? If publishing is the ultimate goal, perhaps you (the student) should first investigate the most prestigious journals. Many of these journals have very specific areas of focus, such as exclusively history or philosophy. For example, business papers often stand out more when you write an original research topic, not just literature reviews. It would be difficult to know this unless you’ve gone about it the other way and researched publishers before even starting your paper.
